Brighid

Our writing group’s prompt for this month is to write something in honor of Brighid.

Brighid, Mistress of Poetry
Bring guidance from the east
Send inspiration dancing on the wind
Walk with us Brighid

Brighid, Matron of the Forge
Bring strength from the south
Send courage burning with the flame
Walk with us Brighid

Brighid, Lady of the Sacred Wells
Bring healing from the west
Send serenity in the water
Walk with us Brighid

Brighid, Foster Mother of Us All
Bring wisdom from the north
Send stability through the earth
Walk with us Brighid

Brighid, Goddess Divine
Bring your spark of spirit
Send us your love
Walk with us Brighid

Pagan Blog Project – Week 1 B

Books

Last night at the Steel Phoenix Writers Meeting at Barnes & Noble, we brainstormed for my topic for this week’s PBP post. Bats, Bast, broomcloset, beginnings, bodywork, belief, … and yet the answer surrounded us, books. Do we all gather books? I remember my initial chain of books, like a pathway into the woods. A breakup with a boyfriend in college led me to want to read something with no men – Jean Stewart’s Return to Isis fit the bill. That led me to D.J. Conway’s Maiden, Mother, Crone, which pointed be towards Scott Cunningham’s Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, and then on to Buckland’s Big Blue Complete Book of Witchcraft. From there, the books spread like a river into a delta, gathering up everything from tarot to totems to meditation to mythology to feminism to fairies.

Pagan Bookworms

Partially in an attempt to help with the numerous reading challenges I’ve pledged to this year (other parts include it sounded fun and others seemed interested and I wanted another Thursday night meeting), I’ve started a Pagan book discussion group. Pagan Bookworms is an offshoot of the Steel Phoenix Writers Group.

At the first meeting (this month), we hashed out a reading list for the rest of the year. We also concluded that readings are not mandatory, people who want to learn about the books and/or join in the resulting discussions are most welcome. We expect a very fluid group as it is understood that different books will interest different people. Both fiction and nonfiction are included in our reading list. Several of the books are by local authors, and we are hoping to have them visit the group to discuss their books with us.

2012 Pagan Bookworms Reading List

March 8 – Women’s Rites, Women’s Mysteries by Ruth Barrett, Chapters 1 – 7
April 12 – Women’s Rites, Women’s Mysteries by Ruth Barrett, Chapters 8 – 13
May 10 – Vermin by Scott A Johnson
June 14 – Science of the Craft by William H. Keith, Jr., Chapters 1 – 9
July 12 – Science of the Craft by William H. Keith, Jr., Chapters 10 – 19
August 9 – Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn
September 13 – Pagan Polyamory by Raven Kaldera, Parts 1 – 3
October 11 – Pagan Polyamory by Raven Kaldera, Parts 4 – App.
November 8 – Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Pages 1 – 408
December 13 – Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Pages 409 – 912

Hopefully, I’ll be adding all of these to my “read” bookshelves over at GoodReads.

Steel Phoenix Writers Group

Here is a short write-up on the local writers group with whom I hang out. They are tremendously helpful and supportive, and a lot better at rhythm than I am.

NaPoWriMo #12 revision

One of my poems for NaPoWriMo was an attempt at a sonnet. Although I love the form, I am notoriously bad with meter, so I took that original draft to the Steel Phoenix writers meeting for help. I am actually quite proud that the second stanza appeared to be correct rhythmically!
Here is the updated version, with many thanks to the members of Steel Phoenix:

Steel Phoenix

I’m heading out to the monthly meeting of the Steel Phoenix Writers Group, a local pagan writers group that gathers every third Thursday of the month at Borders. I printed out all the NaPoWriMo poems to date, we’ll see what more objective, unbiased eyes than mine think of them. And hopefully I’ll come home with # 15 ready to post.
