Mare TV #napowrimo : 2

electronic eyes
looking down from the rafters
watching the mares sleep

For the last several weeks out at the farm, we’ve been trying to set up a new camera system for the barn. Eight cameras, one over each pregnant mare, broadcast across the farm network to the house, where Mom can keep an eye on them all using an iPad (there’s also an app for my phone so I can peek in too). DrQuuxum got the last bug out of the system for us yesterday, and things will be operational for foaling season. All that’s left is to bury the cable connecting the house and the barn, currently it’s strung from window to window.

Good Old Days

2011 NOVEMBER PAD CHAPBOOK CHALLENGE: DAY 26

For today’s prompt, write a good old days poem. Sometimes the good old days were actually good or not, everyone has a good old days poem in them (even if it’s someone else’s good old days story). So dig deep and pull it out.

heavy horses gave
companionship and hard work
replaced by cold steel

Against All Odds

2011 NOVEMBER PAD CHAPBOOK CHALLENGE: DAY 30

For this month’s final prompt, write an “against all odds” poem. I often feel like we have to fight against the odds, the elements, the technology, etc., to complete these challenges, but there are so many other scenarios that involve someone or something working against all odds to make something happen.

racing
against all odds
for triple crown glory
young horses pound the track, records
to break

Once upon a …

2011 NOVEMBER PAD CHAPBOOK CHALLENGE: DAY 16

For today’s prompt, take the phrase “Once Upon a (Blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem.

once upon a horse
confidence and self esteem
seem second nature

Cafepress in Green

In October, I realized that I had made enough money playing in cafepress that I could buy three months of a premium store. And, realizing those three months would be the fourth quarter Christmas rush, I jumped on the idea. The difference between the free store and the premium store is the number of items you can offer. The free store allows only one of each kind of item (tee shirt, long sleeve tee, mug, …). The premium store offers all items with as many designs as you want to put on them. The last month has been quite busy with taking and sorting pictures, editing them, adding them to the site and picking the products on which to put them.
I have a hard time finding things to put on some of the color schemes that cafepress offers. I mentioned here my victory in finding something for the hideous yellow tee shirt and messenger bag (hideous mostly because the color comes through whatever artwork you use, not just because I’m not a yellow person).
There is also a green tee shirt that has the same bleed through issue as the yellow. Tonight I found something that I think goes pretty well on it.

Finally playing with the baby photos

Earlier this summer, I spent a couple afternoons out at Mom’s farm taking pictures of this year’s foals. I finally had a chance to sit down and play with some of the resulting images. There are lots of photos up on Flickr (check the sidebar) and here’s one that I edited for use on Cafepress:

So far, Mom’s my biggest customer, but I’m having fun designing stuff. I think that many of my images are best suited to journals and cards and the like, so I may eventually look into getting a paid account. The free account only lets you make one item of each kind.

Some friends came out to the farm to meet the babies. Here’s one of my favorites from that evening’s photo shoot:

Final Poem for NaPoWriMo

afternoon outing
mares grazing in the pasture
calm, peaceful spring day
only bird song interrupts
sitting on the porch
drowsy in the warm sunshine
watching the horses
as they search for sweet young grass

movement in the field
sliver of white dashing by
ethereal form
playing beside the broodmares
shining in the sun
is this a ghost of foals past
or just an easy birthing

Glory's Filly
Mom let the mares out around 3 in the afternoon. When she looked out around 5, there was a baby running around! So just an easy, unassisted birthing. This is filly number 4.

Appy?

still damp from birthing
foal’s coat embellished with spots
that vanish when dry

The first foal of the season was born last night at Hidden Timber Ranch.

Babe's Filly

I swear I posted this earlier, but now it’s not showing. Could be a sign that it’s past time for bed.
