Layers at the Base of Mount Sharp
A chapter of the layered geological history of Mars is laid bare in this postcard from NASA’s Curiosity rover. The image shows the base of Mount Sharp, the rover’s eventual science destination.

Curiosity
She should reach the floor of Gale Crater in just about three hours. I’m probably going to wait up. Because I love the rovers. I am a geek. How much of a geek?
Godspeed and safe landings.

Hawkeye slays my heart
I finally saw The Avengers this past weekend. I came away with quite a crush. Now I’m making plans to find Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Thor, The Hurt Locker, The Town, Dahmer, and S.W.A.T. as well as looking forward to seeing The Bourne Legacy, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Nick Fury in the theater. And I bought the soundtrack Avengers Assemble. Because I’m like that with new infatuations.

Covert (noun)
Hunting . a thicket giving shelter to wild animals or game
animals huddle
hidden within the covert
as gunshots ring out
One of the spring fox pups stayed at the farm this year. We often saw him playing in the pastures. If we were working around the barn, he would hunker down in the tall grass and watch us, ears up and bright eyed. He’d chase butterflies and his own fluffy tail in the evening sun. Just past sun set one autumn evening, we saw him bounding down towards the pipeline. Five minutes later, in the darkness, we heard two shots ring out. We never saw that playful spirit again.
I hate small game season.

Trying to sneak this one in right under the wire, linky says submissions close in just half an hour. And my sister asks why my muse gives me so many procrastination poems.

Happy International Friendship Day!
Appropriately, I spent the day with my best friend, Tora, who is here on vacation from England, as well as a mutual, local friend, Nichole, whom I only ever seem to connect with when Tora visits. So this poem is dedicated to the two of them.
through this life’s chaos
time and distance separate

Haiku Heights #54, this week’s prompt is Confession. My brain took what is probably an odd route with this one. The storms this summer have been beautiful, and powerful. Weather patterns certainly seem to be shifting more to extremes.

The Monday poetry potluck hosted at Jingle Poetry has as a theme this week Nature and Life. I thought of linking to an older poem, but the current heat wave is obviously still on my mind.
