Brighid Along Day 2 – Foster Mother

Brighid Along Day 2 — Foster Mother

This aspect comes mainly from early stories of the Irish saint of the same name having served as foster mother to the Christ-child. While historically impossible, these stories show the importance of fosterage in Irish culture, which far predated the arrival of Christianity on the island, and very possibly similar stories and qualities in the goddess from whom Saint Brigid’s cult assumed so much.
— Diane “Emerald” Bronowicz Egelhoff, on Behalf of Sassafras Grove, ADF

Brighid, Foster Mother
adopting us as your own
your divine children
you watch over the seeker
behold, teachers appear
nurturing and mentoring
your presence is felt
instilling in us
the virtues found in ghosti
weaving together
the strands of community
binding us as one
not all family is blood
reciprocity
holds the web of my clan strong
Walk with me, Foster Mother

Can’t Stop the Signal

Text taken from the petition site:
SpaceX has been awarded the contract to produce NASA’s next manned spacecraft, which is tentatively scheduled for launch in 2015. We’re calling on SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk to christen the first of these manned Dragon capsules “Serenity,” after the fictional ship of the same name in Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” universe.

Tell SpaceX: Next manned US spacecraft should be named “Serenity”

We respectfully encourage SpaceX to christen the first of their manned Dragon spacecraft Serenity, after the ship of the same name in Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” universe.

A Dragon spacecraft with this name would represent the shared hopes and dreams of everyone who is cheering for the success of an American space program that has been revitalized and revolutionized with the help of private industry–people who, like the diverse crew that shares a common goal in Whedon’s Serenity, envision a world where a privately-owned spaceship represents the opportunity for a better life and the spirit of independence can be realized in space.

Christening the first Dragon in honor of Whedon’s fictional spaceship would not only speak to the important role that man’s ability to dream without constraint plays in providing the spark that fuels the fire of human achievement, but as the first manned spacecraft built by a private entity, it would also represent the hope of a future in which the blessings and true freedom that only the stars can offer will be open to every man, woman and child. We believe very strongly that there is no name that would reflect this better than Serenity, and we urge you to give the name your serious consideration.

Thank you.

Annoyances #napowrimo : 13

Last week’s theme at Sensational Haiku Wednesday was Annoyance.

spring annoyances
mixtures of pollen and snow
filling every breath

Yesterday, we had both a winter storm warning and a local pollen alert at the same time.

Suspicion

2011 NOVEMBER PAD CHAPBOOK CHALLENGE: DAY 19

For today’s prompt, write a “suspicious minds” poem. When I assembled these prompts more than a month ago, I considered this one of my more unusual (and more creative) prompts… Anyway, I’m thinking there are a few ways to go with this prompt. One, write a poem in which the narrator is either suspicious of someone or is the actual one under suspicion. Two, write a poem that plays with repetition–as this song does. Three, write a poem that is a performance poem spectacular (as this song is here). Of course, you can always bend and blend the prompt as you see fit.

suspicion lingers
shattered trust slowly rebuilds
with loving patience
lengthy process to replace
past abusive memories

breaking

2011 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 5

For today’s prompt, write a broken poem. The poem can be specifically about something breaking or just include something (or someone for that matter) that’s broken.

Earth’s climate shifting
natural cycles breaking
traumatic changes
violent storms, fires, earthquakes, droughts
planet crying out in pain
