I received a new camera for Christmas! My parents got me a Nikon D5100. I also got strep throat for Christmas! bleh But that left me with time to play with the camera and watch Mom’s bird feeder.

I had to look up to see if goldfinches stayed around through the winter. I guess I just never recognized them in their duller winter feathers.

Mammal Monday is back after a brief hiatus (during which I learned how to remove spammy links)!

Hidden Timbers Shining Streak, miniature horse foal at Hidden Timber Ranch

We have new arrivals out at Hidden Timber Ranch. Pixie II, the little black calico, came from a friend at work. She had rescued a stray cat who promptly had kittens under her bed. Pixie came home the same day as Partly Cloudy, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Pixie is smaller (coming from a malnourished mom) and much more timid than Cloudy. Cloudy is rambunctious and full of energy and curiosity and very protective of her new little sister.

Bitsy is not too sure what to think of the new arrivals. She wants to love on them, but if she gets too close, Pixie arches up and hisses, and Mom hollers at the dog to back off. It’s not her fault that her tongue is bigger than the kitten.

These guys roamed the bottom of the Erie Zoo exhibit they shared with a two-toed sloth who slept high in his crate and golden lion tamarins who bounced everywhere in between.
I keep saying I want to start a posting hub for Mammal Monday, so here is my first test run. Please link in and help me see if this works!

This is the bird I was tracking at Misery Bay in Presque Isle State Park. I, my birding partner, and friends at the National Aviary have all identified it as a trumpeter swan. When I submitted the observation in to eBird, they identified it as a tundra swan. Either way, a lifer for me!

Sadly, aptly named. I took a tumble walking back to the car from this shot. Still icing the knee. Although I did manage to not damage the binoculars, the camera, or the birding book I was carrying at the time.
